personal life, including a messy divorce with his wife winnie, who stood behind him while he was in jail. >> president obama addressed the nation this afternoon. his comments were very personal. he spoke of how mandela inspired millions of people to fight for justice and democracy, including himself. >> the day he was released from prison gave me a sense of what human beings are guided by their hopes and not by their fears. like so many around the globe, i cannot imagine my own life without the example mandela set. >> take a look at this video. it is from oakland. mandela came to the bay area and

58,000 people filled the coliseum to meet him. many recall being face to face with the man who changed the world. we have a look at nelson mandela through their eyes. >> reporter: we spoke with barbara lee. she says the bay area holds a special connection for him because of the leadership and the people here who fight for human rights and against apartheid in south africa. he stood smiling in front of a crowd of about 60,000 people packed into the oakland coliseum. this was 1990, and the bay area was the last stop in the u.s. tour for north america. he once led the effo--

>> it was an amazing moment. he came to say thank you. he came to talk about freeing south africa and what he was going to do. it was quite a special moment for the bay area. >> reporter: here in oakland, a street was named after him, mandela parkway. he received the nobel peace prize. he was on a terrorist watch list since the 1970s. legislation passed into 2008. the congresswoman said his passing reaffirms the passion she has to continue fighting for what she believes is right. >> it reminds us don't get weary and tired. keep fighting for what's right. >> reporter: she had the privilege of meeting mandela several times, describing him as incredibly peaceful and serene

now to the weather. the bay area is under a freeze warning for the second night in a row. here's a live look over san jose. the cold weather has made for some dangerous driving conditions. we begin tonight's team coverage with our chief meteorologist who is tracking the cold snap and something else unusual that might be headed our way. >> that is snowfall. it was 16 degrees in napa at 6:00 this morning. a new record for you and the coldest temperatures all yearlong. just off to the north of the bay area, clear lake at 11. morgan hill 21. san jose coming in at 28. freeze warning still in effect for friday morning for most of the bay area, except for san francisco. we are eventually going to get

some relief in these overnight temperatures. we'll have more on that coming up. also some details on when some rain-snow mix will come unusually close to the bay area. all week, people have been urged to make the proper precautions. how about this story? it was colder in napa this morning than it was in fairbanks, alaska. jody hernandez is in napa this evening. you have the perfect spot with that fire, jody. >> reporter: like everyone in wine country, we're doing our best to stay warm tonight. fortunate fortunately, we have found a nice toasty spot. now that the sun has gone down, it's cold. >> it's freezing. it's crazy how cold it is.

>> reporter: foclks napa are feeling the big chill. temperatures dipped down into the teens this morning. >> it is definitely freezing. it feels like antarctica. way too cold for napa. way too cold. >> reporter: the freezing temps kept public works crews busy as pipes and a water main burst this morning. the city sending out tweets alerting residents to take precautions. >> as the cold weather has had a cumulative effect from night tonigt tonight, there's the potential we could have some more breaks in the lines. >> reporter: the fountain flowing now, but take a look at it this morning when the mercury plunged. >> to get into the mid 20s is

what what we would normally see. to get below 20 last night is very unusual. >> reporter: if you have to be outside tonight, this is definitely the place to be. the only thing i'm missing is that cup of hot cocoa. i'm jody hernandez, nbc bay area news. from the north bay to the south bay, it is just cold. the cold had people rushing into auto repair shops. >> reporter: the temperature in san jose has dropped two degrees in just the past hour. it's 50 degrees. let's give it a second. 50 degrees. we are in for a cold night. most drivers know black ice is one of the big worries when the sun goes down and the

temperatures plummet, but it's not the only cold-related car problem. the service center has seen an increase of people coming in because the chilly air caused the air in their tires to compress. >> today is colder than it was yesterday, but i've had probably dozens of phone calls. >> reporter: in most cases if you drive your car for a few hours, the tire pressure light will go off on its own. another concern for commuters -- >> i noticed a lot of ice on my car. i walked out and it was super cold. >> reporter: the cold does have its benefits. it's heating this business up. >> we've been having an increase in sales of soups and hot sandwiches. >> reporter: the key is to be prepared so the plummeting temps don't put any added pressure on you. here in san jose they expect it

in central idaho there's still no word or sighting of the san jose missing since saturday. the search has ended for today. tomorrow's search may be cancelled since snow is the forecast. they were flying from oregon to montana when he reported engine failure. the terrain is so remote and potentially dangerous only experienced crews are participating. today some search planes and helicopters were equipped with infrared radar, but still nothing. here at home dozens of people demanding higher wages at places like jack in the box and

mcdonald's. earlier today in oakland, protesters crowded into this mcdonald's on jackson street and called on the employees inside to walk off the job. workers are calling for $15 an hour and the right to form a union. while companies are making record profits, cities and counties are forced to provide their underpaid workers with services. one worker has seen evidence of that first-hand. >> sometimes there's not enough money for food and i have to go to the food bank. i have a job. i shouldn't have to do that. >> similar protests taking place across the country today in more than 100 cities. the field will now be known as kabam. the san francisco bay's company is paying $18 million for the naming rights for 15 years.

who said that? >> i do believe that. >> freeze warning extended throughout tomorrow morning. temperatures ranging from 21 to 36 degrees for most of the bay area. take a look at the bottom of that list there. some warmer temperatures filtering in by saturday. we have a lot to talk about. we'll get to that in a minute. the coldest average in the north bay was upper 30s. another chilly night. record setting lows in the morning. let's get a look here across the peninsula. we're expecting numbers right near the freezing mark as you get going on that friday morning. 34 degrees. cloud cover increasing. that's the sign of this next storm system we're going to be

tracking. friday, it's going to stay chilly. you'll need that jacket. temperatures not ranging too much here. 49 degrees to 51. 51 expected right there in san jose. north bay, east bay, trivalley, 48 to 50 degrees. clouds increased by the afternoon. livermore at 51. you can see that l up there. that's the area of upper low pressure that's going to mix in with all this polar air that's been diving down. take a look at this. the potential of rain-snow mixing into the forecast about saturday. 23 in napa. not quite as cold. wind in the atmosphere will stir things up. that'll inhibit those

temperatures to drop as cold as it was this morning. 32 into san jose. we'll see some showers develop at 5:00 p.m. on friday. no snow just then. friday night, still mainly showers. saturday morning we'll have some of the coldest air in place. we could get some rain-snow mixing in across the bay area. that's a likely scenario from saturday towards south san jose and gilroy. that potential for some snowfall. the overall details go like this. the best chance from 3:00 a.m. to about 9:00 a.m. on saturday morning for the east and south bay hills. the hills above 2500 feet could have 1 to 3 inches. valley floor, rain-snow mix. that winter weather advisory in effect from 10:00 p.m. friday

the hunt is on for a thief who swiped a san jose police officer's badge. authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward. the fear is someone out there

might falsely use the badge. get ready for batkid the sequ sequel. he's now planning to return to san francisco this saturday. this time he'll be playing the part of fundraiser. they're planning to kickoff the brave the bay 5k run. so they've always been home delivery services for christmas trees. if you're not too particular about picking out that perfect tree, you can go high-tech and order it from your smartphone. uber is one example. the ride sharing service is teaming up with home depot to deliver trees but just to san francisco and other cities around the country. you can use it until 8:00 tonight. order the tree.
